Travel Information

Freiburg is located in the extreme south-west of Germany close to the French and Swiss borders. The Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics is situated in the northern part of Freiburg, approximately 10 minutes drive from Freiburg main station.

Travel by plane 

Basel EuroAirport (about 75 km), Strasbourg International Airport (about 90 km), Zurich Airport (about 150 km), and Frankfurt International Airport (about 260 km) are the closest airports to Freiburg. Frankfurt and Zurich airports will be the airports of choice for most US flights.

All above mentioned airports are connecting to Freiburg by public transport (trains, busses). 

A more convenient - albeit more expensive - way to reach Freiburg is by airport taxi (shared or executive). Please book well in advance and make sure the company knows the place of departure, flight number and arrival time. Please check with the companies for fares, f.e.

Basel Euroairport is the most convenient airport for travel to Freiburg.

The Freiburger Airportbus, a bus service provided by Freiburger Airportservice, takes you from Basel EuroAirport direct to Freiburg main station. The bus stop can be found at the French exit, in front of the airport building (arrivals level). Tickets can be purchased in the bus, payable in cash. A return ticket is currently EUR 38,00. A shuttle train runs between Strasbourg International Airport and Strasbourg main station 3 to 5 times an hour on weekdays, 1 to 3 times on Saturdays and 1 to 2 times on Sundays (timetable in French). The travel from Strasbourg main station to Freiburg main station by high-speed train takes between 1-2 hours. Single tickets cost approximately between EUR 47-55,- (from Strasbourg for French trains: TGV) and EUR 25,- (from Freiburg for German trains: ICE, EC). In order to check fares and schedules, please go to the Raileurope website. Tickets can be purchased online, and they are shipped internationally. Please go to the Deutsche Bahn homepage (Germany) and the SNCF website (France) for checking fares and timetables with the respective national railway companies.


Train services from Zurich Airport to Freiburg train station take about 2 to 2,5 hours and run about every half an hour. You will have to change trains at least once, though.
An airport taxi or car will need approximately 1 1/2 hours from Zurich Airport to Freiburg.


There are two railway stations at Frankfurt Airport with routes to Freiburg as follows:

Long-distance trains leave from "Fernbahnhof". There are trains to Freiburg every hour (one change), direct trains about every two hours. Single tickets cost around EUR 65,00, depending on the class of train (ICE, IC or EC).

Regional trains which leave from "Regionalbahnhof" are slower and you might have to change trains several times. One-way tickets cost around EUR 54,00, depending on the class of train. Please go to the Deutsche Bahn homepage for checking fares and timetables.

Travel by car

From Frankfurt: 

From the motorway A5 (Karlsruhe/Basel) take exit 61 Freiburg-Nord toward Waldkirch/Elztal/Glottertal/Gundelfingen. Turn left at B294 (signs for Freiburg/Waldkirch/Elztal/ Glottertal/Gundelfingen). Merge onto B3 via the ramp to Freiburg. Take the exit toward Lörrach/ Donaueschingen/Gundelfingen/FR-Hochdorf/FR-Nord. Turn left at Zinkmattenstraße. Continue onto Hans-Bunte-Straße. Turn left at Stübeweg.

From Basel:

From the motorway A5 (Basel/Karlsruhe) take exit 62 Freiburg-Mitte toward Freiburg/Donaueschingen/Titisee-Neustadt. Merge onto B31a. Take the exit toward FR-Landwasser/FR-Betzenhausen/Messe/IKEA. Merge onto Paduaallee. Continue onto Granadaallee and Lembergallee. Turn right at Tullastraße. Take the first right onto Stübeweg.

From Strasbourg:

From A35 (Nancy/Metz/Saint-Dié-des-Vosges/Colmar) take exit 7 La Vigie for N83 toward Erstein/Illkirch-Graffenstaden. Keep left at the fork to continue toward N83 and merge onto N83. Take the exit onto N353 toward Eschau. Continue onto L98, merge then onto A5 via the ramp to Basel. Take exit 61 Freiburg-Nord toward Waldkirch/Elztal/Glottertal/Gundelfingen. Turn left at B294 (signs for Freiburg/Waldkirch/Elztal/ Glottertal/Gundel- fingen). Merge onto B3 via the ramp to Freiburg. Take the exit toward Lörrach/Donaueschingen/Gundelfingen/FR-Hochdorf/FR-Nord. Turn left at Zinkmattenstraße. Continue onto Hans-Bunte-Straße and turn left at Stübeweg.

Travel by train 

Freiburg Hauptbahnhof (main station) is located in the city centre. There are express services to all countries in Europe by fast national and international trains.

From Freiburg city centre to the MPI:

By taxi

Taxis are available outside Freiburg main station or can be booked by telephone at +49 761 55 55 55. The journey to MPI-IE from the train station/city centre takes about 10 minutes and costs between EUR 10,- and 15,-.

By public transport 

Tram 2 (direction Zähringen/Reutebachgasse) leaves from Freiburg city centre (the stop "Bertoldsbrunnen" is located on the main shopping street Kaiser-Joseph-Straße). The tram leaves approximately every 7 - 15 minutes. Please get off at "Tullastraße" (9 minutes). Continue onto Tullastraße until Zinkmattenstraße. At the roundabout, turn right. Turn left at Stübeweg (approx. 15 minutes by foot).

Alternatively, you can take buses 7200/7206 from the ZOB (central bus station) next to Freiburg main station (about 20 minutes). Get off at "Stübeweg". The bus stop is located at the corner of Hans-Bunte-Straße and Stübeweg on the left. A one-way ticket for both tram and bus costs EUR 2.30, a day ticket EUR 6.00.
